Cupcakes are Perfect for Building Relationships

Cupcakes are Perfect for Building Relationships

Happy Friday!

My daughter Ellie is 5 years old and is in kindergarten. She often tells her friends at school how fun it is that her mom is always decorating cupcakes and cakes for photo shoots and decorating tutorials. This week I decorated 4 of our new upcoming kits: Animal Cupcake Kit, Princess Cupcake Kit, Under the Sea Cupcake Kit, and Monster Squad Cupcake Kit. Ellie couldn't even believe it when she heard that I was sending all of the cupcakes to her classroom as a Friday surprise this morning since I finished up with my photos! The emotions were real.

Ellie has 24 kids in her class so I sent her with 24 cupcakes. Being the sweet, tender hearted girl that she is, she didn't want kids fighting over the cool designs. We sat down together with a list of all of the kids in her class and chose which cupcake they should have and why.

I couldn't believe how well Ellie knew every single kid in her class. These aren't just classmates, these are her friends. At 5 years old kiddos have such a beautiful way of getting along with each other and creating meaningful relationships. Ellie enjoyed sharing stories with me about her friends and why they were getting their chosen cupcake. "Rita gets the magical wand cupcake from the Princess Kit because she loves Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother. Pierce gets the beach cupcake from the Under the Sea Kit because he goes to the beach every weekend with his family. Kennedy gets the dog cupcake from the Animal Kit because she has a big yellow doggy at home..." She went on and on.

Typically Ellie and I spend special time in the kitchen together baking and decorating but this was a different experience for us. We bonded over the cupcakes and their designs and what they can represent in her life.

I sent proud Ellie off to school with the tray while me and little sister, Sophie, anxiously await her arrival home this afternoon. Check out Sophie in the window saying "bye cupcakes!!"

Ellie Joy Makes Valentine's Treats

Ellie Joy Makes Valentine's Treats

At My Make Studio we love our cupcakes. We love our cakes. But we also love...well every sweet you can think of!! My true joy as many of you know is baking with children. That's how My Make Studio got started in the first place. I love watching kids get creative with food and learn to express themselves.

This year for Valentine's Day I told Ellie Joy she could pick anything she wanted to make for her friends at school. She chose Red Rice Krispy Treats dipped in White Chocolate with Sprinkles! Obviously.

Check out this adorable video of her adventures making her yummy treats for all of her friends.

Have you tried out any fun baking ideas with kiddos lately? We'd love to see!

Scroll to the bottom for quick directions on making Red Rice Krispy Treats!

-Stay Creative!

Step 1: In a large saucepan melt 3 tbsp butter over medium heat.

Step 2: Stir in 10 oz (1 bag) of mini marshmallows. Stir until the butter and marshmallows are fully incorporated into a sticky gooey delicious mess! This is Ellie's favorite part.

Step 3: Add food coloring if you want! Ellie Joy added a few drops of red food coloring for Valentine's Day. Liquid food coloring works better than than gel.

Step 4: Stir in 6 cups of Rice Krispie cereal. Stir until it's fully incorporated into the marshmallow mixture.

Step 5: Spray a 13x9x2 inch pan with grease or spray. Spread your Rice Krispie mixture all over the bottom of the pan. Ellie Joy placed wax paper over top of the mixture to help "smoosh" it all down nicely.

Step 6: Refrigerate your mixture for 30 minutes. Then pop it right out of the pan. Now you have one GIANT Rice Krispie Treat! Cut it up into however many squares you would like.

Step 7: Microwave a cup of white melting chocolate for 20 second intervals. Stir. Don't over cook these or they burn and smell bad!

Step 8: Dip one end of your Rice Krispy treat into the melted white chocolate. Immediately roll it in sprinkles and place back on your work surface.

Step 9: Take them to school to show all of your friends!

Step 10: Enjoy!

Love Bug Cupcake Tutorial

Love Bug Cupcake Tutorial

Ever wondered why Chef Chayla incorporates Love Bug cupcakes into some of her favorite kits? Find out why during this cute tutorial and learn a few tricks along the way on how to customize your very own Love Bug Cupcake. Use candy eyes, icing for eyes, or sixlets for eyes and a variety of icing tips to create different "hair" textures and color combinations so your Love Bug is just right for you or for your special someone this Valentine's Day!

We would love to see your variation of a Love Bug cupcake. Post it online and use #mymakestudiokits

Scroll down to read different options for decorating Love Bugs.

-Say Creative-

Hair Options: You can use the grass tip or the star tip to create "bloops" of hair all over your cupcake. You can use 1-3 colors depending on how you want your Love Bug to look. You can also alternate between the star and grass tip if you want your Love Bug to have crazy hair. When using the Grass Tip you could also squeeze longer "bloops" out to have longer hair.

Eye Options: Candy eyes are of course an easy and obvious option here. You can also use white sixlets and tiny dots of black icing to create larger eyes. You can place the eyes close together or further apart on the cupcake.

Antennae's: We create our antennae's out of fondant and toothpicks and make little hearts. You could use any type of fun candies in place of fondant. We have seen gum drops and gummy hearts as examples. If using fondant you can make them as big or as little as desired.

Step 1: Follow the directions for any vanilla cupcake recipe.

Step 2: Once your vanilla cupcake mix is prepared, add the food color of your choice. We like to use liquid food coloring. Add more drops to create a brighter look.

Step 3: Pour in 1/4 cup of sprinkles - any color you want! You don't want to add too many or your cupcakes get sort of cruncy.

Step 4: PARTY!

Linda's MMS Journey

Linda's MMS Journey

Linda grew up watching her mom and grandma bake and decorate beautiful wedding cakes. She admired their edible art form but was never allowed to play with their materials or tools. You see, cake decorating is quite expensive. There are so many tools required to create different designs and they typically have to be purchased from specialty baking stores. Experimenting with new flavors and colors can be tricky as well because you can easily destroy an entire batch of cake mix or icings. Cake decorating is truly an art form that is not very accessible to many people. Nonetheless, Linda loved watching her mom and grandma decorate.

As Linda grew older she went off to college at the University of Georgia. She decided to go into the obvious work. You didn't see that coming, did you? When reflecting on her life, Linda realized that her true passion was working with people. In order to fundraiser for various programs she enjoyed supporting, Linda often sold cupcakes on her college campus. It wasn't uncommon to see her walking around campus with dozens of silly decorated cupcakes. For the first time in her life, Linda was experiencing first hand the joys of cupcake and cake decorating.

In 2014 Linda met her husband, Jay, in Colorado where she had attended graduate school at University of Denver. Jay had two sons who were adopted from foster care: Simon and Adrian. It became increasingly clear that Linda couldn't continue a day job in social work and still be able to provide the level of therapeutic needs that her new sons deserved. Returning to her roots, Linda opened My Make Studio March 1, 2015 with the help of her husband and grandfather.

My Make Studio began as a simple decorate yourself cupcake and cake studio in South Denver. The studio could hold 24 customers who would come in, choose their flavors, and enjoy a buffet style of decorating tools and materials. Linda had over a dozen icing colors, a dozen fondant colors, 30+ candies and 100's of tools. Summer camps and Gingerbread Houses were a quick addition to the seasonal offerings. In 2016 Linda went on maternity leave with her first daughter, Ellie. Chayla was hired on at My Make Studio at this time and life would never be the same. Chayla provided a whole new energy to Linda's passion and desperately wanted to teach classes.

Chayla's classes were creative and silly and great for all ages and skill levels. She has a true talent for teaching people how to decorate. 2019 was a big year for Linda and Chayla as Linda had her second daughter, Sophie, and made the bold move to expand My Make Studio. January 6, 2020 the newest and greatest My Make Studio opened inside of the Edgewater Public Market. Linda's new space could hold 60 customers at a time and was surrounded by local food and shopping vendors that she could create a community with. Customers were thrilled to have more seats and an amazing market to explore after their cupcake decorating activity. As you all know though, 2020 quickly became one of the most difficult years Linda could ever imagine.

The doors to My Make Studio closed in March of 2020 due to the COVI19 virus. Devastated was an understatement for Linda and Chayla. They could feel their studio slipping out of their hands when a friend asked if they could create a kit that encompassed one of their classes so they could decorate from the safety of their home. Linda and Chayla were excited to have a project to work on so they moved quickly. By April of 2020 they launched My Make Studio Kits for curbside pick up in Denver. Customers were thrilled to have a piece of My Make Studio at home and wanted to know if they could ship the kits to family and friends around the country who were in quarantine. By May of 2020 Linda and Chayla were shipping kits nationwide. This opened a whole new world for My Make Studio filled with new energy and creativity.

Today, Linda and Chayla have the best of both worlds. While COVID 19 is not behind us, My Make Studio is safely seating customers as they decorate their kit from their table. The original buffet style is no more but customers are thrilled with the variety of kits to choose from. Kits are constantly evolving and Linda and Chayla enjoy every minute of designing new ones. My Make Studio continues to be a beloved business by the community and in 2021 was even voted Best Dessert and Best Bakery by 5280 Magazine.

Linda will forever be grateful for every step in her journey. Most of all, she is grateful for her family: Her mom and grandma who inspired her by their artistic talents. Her grandfather who immigrated from Cuba and built a strong foundation in America that allowed him to invest in Linda's dream. Her husband who has spent countless nights helping with dishes and acting as "technical support". Her father who always provides insightful business advice. Her brothers who have undoubtedly cleaned dishes and worked summer camps. Her four amazing children: Simon, Adrian, Ellie and Sophie who unconditionally support their mother working long hours for her dream. And of course Chayla for being the greatest team member Linda could have ever hoped for.
